With Top Hat, instructors display questions during class that students answer using their smartphones, tablets, or laptops. This means courses can be more interactive for students, and instructors can receive immediate feedback about what concepts students need help with.

The cost for a student license fall 2024 through June 30, 2025, is only $10 per semester.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students don't need to directly purchase a Top Hat license when an instructor orders Top Hat for a course through ICON Direct. The charge for a Top Hat license will be automatically added to your U-Bill like other ICON Direct materials.

Students have until the Office of the Registrar's last day for tuition and fee reduction for the course to opt out of the ICON Direct billing for this material. Before opting out, consider these that:

  • You will lose access to any potential participation points associated with Top Hat activities.
  • You risk losing the ability to complete course materials, which could affect the course outcome.

One active license can be used in multiple Top Hat classes. The ICON Direct system will flag active licenses, preventing multiple charges.

Students who purchased a lifetime license will not need to pay a fee or opt out of the ICON Direct program, as their license will be recognized.

Students with an active license will not need to pay a fee or opt out of the program.

If you change you mind after the deadline to purchase materials, you may purchase a license from Top Hat at the full retail price.
