New Quizzes, an updated quiz engine within ICON, will replace the classic quiz functionality that currently exists. New Quizzes allow instructors to create assessments using a wider variety of question types than were previously available. They will display as assignments on the Assignments page in ICON.

Should I start using New Quizzes?

Currently Classic Quizzes will have more functionality for most instructors. For instructors interested in trying out New Quizzes, we recommend testing them out on an ICON test site or with small, low-stakes quizzes before trying them with an important assessment. It is possible to use both New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes in the same ICON course. The New Quizzes team at Iowa will be updating this advice as more features become available.

Current Status of New Quizzes at Iowa

Instructors can enable New Quizzes in their ICON courses under Feature Options.

The current Canvas timeline for New Quizzes lacks an enforcement date for when institutions must switch completely to New Quizzes. This change has been made so that Canvas can focus on releasing the best possible product while not putting stress on institutions to make the switch from Classic Quizzes.

Iowa has determined that the New Quizzes tool will remain in its current state as a Feature Option for individual courses. The ICON team will continue to monitor Canvas's progress with the tool and provide updates. In the meantime, we will provide resources, consultations, and occasional training for instructors who want to learn more about New Quizzes.
