Turnitin has updated how the external tool function works on ICON (Canvas). This change will impact any assignment created in previous semesters that uses Turnitin as an external tool and has been copied into a fall 2024 course. All new assignments that use Turnitin as an external tool will need to be set up using the updated version.

FAQs
Does Turnitin LTI 1.3 work with Blueprint courses?
Because of how the integration works, Turnitin LTI 1.3 does not currently support Blueprint courses. Turnitin is currently exploring how this could work going forward, but does not have a timeline on it yet.
Can I continue to use the old external tool feature?
Assignments from ICON courses that used the Turnitin external tool and took place before fall 2024 will still work as they did in the past. If these past assignments are copied into new courses, they will be automatically upgraded to use the LTI 1.3 integration.
Can I use Canvas Commons with Turnitin LTI 1.3?
We do not recommend sharing a Turnitin LTI 1.3 assignment to Canvas Commons at this time.
Will this new integration be a dramatic change to how instructors use Turnitin?
When creating new Turnitin LTI 1.3 assignments, instructors will see a change in the assignment creation workflow. However, if they copy a previous assignment, they will see no changes at all. In addition, after they create or copy their assignment and launch the assignment, they will see their students rostered in the Turnitin inbox. Otherwise, there is no dramatic change that instructors will see.
Can I use Turnitin LTI 1.3 as an External Tool assignment type?
With the new LTI 1.3 integration, the assignment launch is from the Course Assignments menu and is no longer listed in the External Tool option when creating an ICON Assignment.
Will the Turnitin LTI 1.3 integration recognize Sections and/or Groups?
Currently, the LTI 1.3 integration does not support Sections or Groups within ICON. However this is something that Turnitin is actively working on with Canvas to make available. Unfortunately, there is no timeline available for this yet.
Can I use SpeedGrader with LTI 1.3 assignment
SpeedGrader does not work with LTI 1.3 assignments. Grades are passed directly to the Gradebook in ICON. The SpeedGrader workflow is a separate workflow to what the LTI integration (external tool) workflow offers. If you prefer to use SpeedGrader to grade, the Canvas Plagiarism Framework integration workflow would be a better fit.
