If you are considering adopting a tool to aid in peer assessment in your course, here are some best practices:

  1. Communicate with students about the values and purposes of peer review/assessment.
  2. Consider students' workload. Two or three assignments per semester has demonstrated a good fit.
  3. Opt for fewer points on the first assignment (students need time to learn the system with the first assignment).
  4. Incorporate instructor-graded assignments after peer review assignments. Students can use these tools as opportunities to revise their work.

  1. Develop specific rubric questions that help focus students' assessment process.
  2. Train students how to apply rubric criteria when they evaluate peers' work.
