ICON Direct is one of the Affordable Content Initiatives sponsored by the University of Iowa Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. ICON Direct allows faculty to order digital content from specific publishers and delivers this content to students and faculty through their ICON course sites.

The content available in the Order Tool is from the publishers that have signed a consortium-level contract with Unizin. Unizin develops partnerships that amplify the role of standards, institutional data ownership, and college affordability in digital education.

A faculty member must decide before the beginning of the semester whether or not ICON Direct eligible materials are appropriate for their course. See this list to help make your determination:

  1. ICON Direct orders should not be duplicated with any other vendors.
  2. Order only material that is required for the academic success of the student. Do not order ICON Direct material unless it is going to be actively used in your course by your students.
  3. Understand that every student will pay for the content through their U-Bill after the start of the course, unless they opt out or completely drop from the class prior to the opt-out deadline.
  4. Commit to communicating to your students on your first day of class about your adoption of ICON Direct material. Suggested language to use in course syllabi and course announcements is available at the ICON Direct Teaching Best Practices page.

All textbook and resource orders should be finalized in MAUI by Early Registration, but no later than four weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the textbook is to be used by students.
