ICON, the university's learning management platform, is primarily powered by Canvas. OTLT regularly tracks updates from Canvas and collaborates with Iowa's developers to make sure ICON supports instructors and students effectively.

Updates to Speedgrader and ICON settings

Canvas updated the Speedgrader user interface, making it possible to adjust rubric views and identify which students are currently being graded. Additionally, the Save button in Course Settings now floats on the screen, reducing the need to scroll.

Use the Canvas dashboard

To help streamline communication and reduce confusion, the ICON Dashboard at icon.uiowa.edu was retired over the summer. To access key features in ICON, instructors and students should use the Canvas dashboard at uiowa.instructure.com.

For current information, see Instructor Dashboard Features and Student Dashboard Features. While a redirect is in place, we encourage you to update any bookmarks.

ICON Course Archiving

The ICON archive process started on July 1. Course marked as archived do not need to be remediated to meet federal accessibility requirements.

Courses enter the archive process a year after they close. Instructors can still access archived courses, but the course name will have “Archived” added. After five years, courses move into Deep Storage, and courses are deleted after a year in Deep Storage. Learn more about the timeline for courses based on when they were taught

A dashboard is available for instructors and departmental admin who wish to adjust when courses enter the archive process. In most cases, the timeline does not need to be adjusted.
