The Research and Analytics team provides expertise to support learning analytics research or implement learning analytics-based interventions to address students' needs in your course, department, or college. The team is available to support you throughout the research process. We can help outline your research questions and provide consultations on the designs of your study, data collection, and analysis. We can also collaborate with instructors who want to submit a proposal leveraging learning analytics for an external funding.

Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs (SoLAR, 2011).

To support learning analytics research, Research and Analytics provides the Iowa learning analytics (LA) umbrella IRB. The purpose of this umbrella IRB is to support Iowa faculty researchers who wish to explore the role and impact of learning analytics in teaching and learning. The Iowa LA umbrella IRB provides faculty researchers with a simpler process of IRB application and delivers de-identified data to answer research questions. Research under this umbrella should be focused  on student learning and support, including improvement of the teaching and learning environment.

To start the process, please follow the steps below.

Step One

Step Two

Step Three

  • Complete and submit the learning analytics umbrella abstract to Research and Analytics.

After your abstract is approved by IRB, Research and Analytics will deliver de-identified research data to you.
