We're excited to announce new leadership in the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology (OTLT) Instructional Services. Effective Dec. 1, Dave Long was named director of OTLT Instructional Services, and Vicky Maloy has taken on the role of associate director of OTLT Academic Technologies.

In OTLT, Dave has demonstrated strong leadership as the associate director of Enterprise Instructional Technology, a team within the OTLT Instructional Services group. Applying techniques and practices from process improvement, service management, change management, digital transformation, and cross-departmental collaboration, the Enterprise Instructional Technology team provides service management and tier three support for ICON, UICapture (Panopto), Gradescope, Turnitin, Elements of Success, iThenticate, Peerceptiv, Pressbooks, Top Hat, and more.

Dave’s leadership extends beyond Iowa to collaborate with peer institutions through various higher education focused communities, including serving as the chair of the Unizin/Instructure Advisory Council, which advocates for the collective needs of Unizin member institutions with Instructure. He served as the chair of the Big Ten Academic Alliance Learning Technology Liaisons group from 2022–2023, which shares best practices for online learning technology among Big Ten institutions. In 2021, Dave was recognized with the University of Iowa Outstanding Staff award for his efforts with ensuring instructional technology met the changing needs of the university during the shift to virtual instruction in 2020.

As the associate director for OTLT Academic Technologies, Vicky will continue to lead the team to promote academic technology to enhance student engagement and success. The course improvement partners, who collaborate with large introductory courses across the university to improve student learning outcomes, will join the Academic Technologies team and will report to Vicky.

In her time at Iowa, Vicky has launched the ICON Direct program, an inclusive access textbook program, that has saved University of Iowa students $9M collectively on required course materials. The team responsible for ICON Direct was recognized with an Improving Our Workplace Award in 2019. She organized the ICON Day conference and established the student-nominated ICON All Star award. She is also working to educate the campus community about artificial intelligence and its implications for higher education.

Vicky and Dave are well known and respected at the university and have extensive experience with OTLT and its campus partners. Please join us in congratulating them on these well-deserved next steps in their careers.

Jonna Higgins-Freese, the previous director of Instructional Services, began a new role as the IT director for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences on Dec. 1.
