TidyUP is a file cleanup tool built into ICON courses. It will scan through an ICON site and allow you to quickly assess what files you want to keep, what you aren't using, and what can be safely deleted.
File build up over the course of years is a persistent problem with ICON courses. Often courses are copied into the subsequent semester and then new files and pages are added, while those from previous iterations of the course site persist. TidyUP will help make it easier to navigate and use your course. By sorting and deleting older content, a course's Ally accessibility score may increase.
TidyUP has three primary components to help clean up ICON course sites:
- Identifying unused files: TidyUP will scan an entire course site and all files to see how many course files are being used. It will provide a drop-down menu with all file types and allow you to preview, search, select, and delete these files easily.
- Checking for unpublished pages: TidyUP will list all the pages in an ICON course and provide insight into their usage, highlighting whether pages are published, if they are linked in modules, if they have content in them, and when they were last updated.
- Removing empty: using TidyUP, you can sort and delete individually or a few at a time. After you've cleaned up a course site, subsequent scans will highlight empty pages and folders and mark them for deletion per your approval.
Get Started with TidyUP
TidyUP will be in available in the left-hand menu on ICON. When you click on it, you can authorize it to scan your course. After it finishes scans, you will be given three tabs that organize all the content in your ICON course:
- Files: this will list all the files that are in your course site by name, list any place where they are "used in" or linked, as well as when they were last updated. You can also click on the top menu to change sorting order to find your oldest files.
- Folders: this will show you a list of all folders in your course site and allow you to delete entire folders if you know they're old and not in use.
- Canvas Content: this will list all the ICON items that are not files (e.g. pages, quizzes, discussion posts, etc.), list any place they are "used in" or linked, as well as when they were last updated. It will also give check marks as to whether these content items are published, linked in any modules, or if they have content in them at all.
In each of these subcategories, you can quickly use the box to select which items are eligible for deletion. You can click on the trash can next to each individual item, or use the check box to select en masse and then click the "Delete Selected" button above.
And that's it! It will remove these old and unused items which will make your course site easier to navigate, make it faster to copy this course forward into future semesters, and likely improve your Ally accessibility score for the course.
