Every day, UI students generate data through actions like logging into ICON courses, downloading PDFs, and watching UICapture (Panopto) videos. Course Activity Insights (CAI) combines this information with additional academic data into a single platform, giving instructors timely, actionable insights into how students interact with their courses.

Here are some examples of how instructors have used CAI:

  • Review shifts in enrollment and prior course work.
  • Check relevance of materials based on students’ programs and prior course work.
  • Help students make connections with other courses they are taking.
  • Find highly active times to send announcements/communications to students.
  • Give specific feedback to students based on their recent engagement.
  • Identify underutilized course materials.

Get Access to CAI for the spring 2026 semester

Before pursuing access to CAI, instructors should consider:

  • CAI is only accessible to instructors, team teachers, and course supervisors (excluding graduate students at this time).
  • Data for CAI is primarily from ICON.
  • At least 11 students must be enrolled in ICON.
  • CAI only shows data for the current fall or spring semester.

Instructors need to complete training that is available as a self-paced asynchronous ICON course. Or they may register for a virtual training session set for Tuesday, Sept. 23, Thursday, Oct. 23, or Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Once training is completed and access to CAI has been approved, CAI will be available for eligible courses taught by the instructor in spring 2026 and each fall/spring semester moving forward.

Instructors who have questions about ICON teaching and learning data beyond the scope of CAI can schedule a consultation.
