Curious about how AI is shaping student learning? The Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology partnered with 10 University of Iowa faculty members to research how students are using AI tools and their impact on learning.

Join us on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in University Capitol Centre 2025D to hear preliminary findings and engage in discussions with faculty research collaborators. To join the conversation, please register for the event.

What to Expect

This session will kick off with a presentation of key insights from a study involving 2,300 UI students—an 80% participation rate across 10 courses and three colleges. This research highlights:

  • Students' experiences with AI tools integrated into their course materials, including their attitudes toward these tools, perceptions of their impact on learning, and preferences for course guidance and policies.
  • Analysis of students' actual interactions with the AI tools, drawn from detailed usage data, and how these relate to learning outcomes.

Following the presentation, a faculty panel discussion will explore:

  • Firsthand experiences of teaching students who had access to generative AI tools.
  • Reflections on the study findings.
  • Practical strategies for leveraging AI tools to enhance teaching and learning

Panelists include:

  • Adam Brummett, associate professor of instruction, Chemistry
  • Erin Irish, associate professor, Biology
  • Mouna Maalouf, associate professor of instruction, Chemistry
  • Krista Osadchuk, assistant professor of instruction, Biology
  • Alberto Segre, professor, Computer Science
  • Michael Sinwell, assistant professor of instruction, Chemistry

This is a chance to engage with research, exchange ideas with fellow faculty, and discuss AI’s impact on learning.
