Summer 2018 Low-prep Reading Group on Teaching for Graduate Students

Do you have 2 hours per month to spend reflecting on your teaching practices?

Do you want the opportunity to discuss teaching with an interdisciplinary group of graduate students at UIowa?

This reading group is designed to provide a low-stakes opportunity for graduate students to reflect on their teaching with their peers while also connecting graduate students to the national conversation about teaching. The time commitment is 2 hours per month.

Specifics:

  • The group will meet for one hour 4 times throughout the semester (May - August) via Zoom video-conferencing using computer or phone. Students should be able to commit to attending at least 3 of the meetings.
  • For each meeting, the group will collectively choose a topic and short reading(s) to focus on. Reading preparation for each monthly meeting will be one hour or less.

Benefits:

Participants will

  • Explore diverse and interdisciplinary experiences with teaching by connecting with diverse graduate students
  • Enhance critical and reflective teaching practices by verbalizing and connecting experiences
  • Enhance understanding of the national conversations surrounding teaching practice by discussing timely literature and events

These experiences will not only enhance students current teaching practices, but will also help students proactively prepare for the job market.

If you are interested in participating in this group for Summer 2018, please fill out the following interest survey. Once responses are collected, Morgan Iommi will be in contact with dates.
