The University of Iowa is moving to Top Hat for its clicker service. After receiving input from numerous advisory committees, including the UI Student Government, the UI will adopt Top Hat as its only centrally supported clicker service by summer 2019.

Top Hat is a streamlined, robust application that assists in creating an interactive classroom environment, giving instructors the option to select from 14 interactive question types including multiple choice, short answer, matching, sorting, and click-on-target.

It is also fully integrated with ICON and automates updating ICON rosters and grades: class rosters are synced and grades can be easily exported to ICON. In addition, students’ responses and participation grades are captured in the Top Hat gradebook for students to access at any time.

Moving to Top Hat

Spring 2019 will serve as a transition semester when both Turning Point and Top Hat will be supported, allowing instructors time to learn the new system and prepare for a more robust platform. Top Hat is working closely with Office of Teaching, Learning & Technology staff members to provide a seamless transition, including:

  • Training: Top Hat will provide one-on-one training sessions for faculty. These sessions will begin in February (details below).
  • Rebates to students: For spring, summer, and fall 2019, students who already own a Turning Point license will qualify for a $20 rebate when purchasing a Top Hat license. This must be done within 28 days of the student buying a Top Hat license. We also are utilizing our Unizin contract to attain reduced pricing for our students.
  • Visit our website for information about costs and which license to purchase, based on your year in school. We highly recommend incoming students and sophomores purchase the lifetime license.
  • To fill out the rebate form, visit tfaforms.com/4719862.

The Enterprise Instructional Technology team has contacted instructional staff in the colleges to offer a faculty demonstration during Darren’s time on campus. Please watch for specific information from your collegiate support staff.
