Kaltura, a new online multimedia platform that stores, publishes, and streams media, will be available to University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students in late spring 2019. Kaltura will replace the ShareStream service, which will be retired in June 2019.

With Kaltura, users can upload media—including audio files, videos, and images—and assign specific permissions to media, sharing items publicly or privately. No special software is needed to view media uploaded to the platform.

Kaltura’s features also make it easier to capture, edit, and caption videos.

  • Users can record video using a webcam, a regular camera, or a combination of a camera and desktop capture.
  • Videos uploaded to Kaltura can be edited online in a user’s browser.
  • Videos can be automatically captioned.

Please consider FERPA and HIPAA when uploading and making videos public.

ICON Integration

Students and instructors can use the Kaltura integration in ICON to upload and share videos within their ICON course. Instructors can review and approve videos before they are available to the rest of the class, and students and instructors can comment on videos.

Instructors will also be able to reuse videos across multiple ICON courses and create video quizzes to assess student learning. Kaltura’s robust analytics will allow instructors to better understand how their students are engaging with videos in their classes.

The Office of Teaching, Learning & Technology will hold training sessions for Kaltura starting in late March through the fall 2019 semester.

The Office of Teaching, Learning & Technology and ITS would like to recognize the Tippie College of Business, the College of Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Distance & Online Education, and the University Libraries for their support of Kaltura.
