The Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool (UDOIT) can be implemented to check areas of ICON courses for accessibility, and provides an easy way to identify areas of a course’s ICON site that may prevent people using assistive technology from accessing the site.

Instructors can add UDOIT to their ICON course's navigation by going to Settings > Navigation tab, dragging the UDOIT link to the active links area, and clicking “save.” Only instructors are able to access UDOIT; this tool is not visible to students.

Once you have enabled UDOIT for your course:

  1. Within your course, choose UDOIT from the left menu.
  2. Select the large green button at the bottom of the screen (Run scanner).
  3. Wait for the scan to complete (usually less than a minute).
  4. Review each of the issues found, and follow the instructions provided to fix the issues.

While no automated tool can provide a 100% guarantee of accessibility (false positives and false negatives are both possible), we believe use of the UDOIT tool is an effective way to help improve the accessibility of our ICON content.

For more information about accessibility and incorporating UDOIT into your course, please visit the Digital Accessibility @ Iowa website.

In conjunction with the rollout (of UDOIT), Todd Weissenberger will offer twenty-minute lightning demonstrations of the UDOIT plug-in during the Faculty/Staff Orientation on Tuesday February 13. The demos will take place in UCC Training Room, 2523, at 12:30, 1:00, 1:30, and 2:00 PM. All instructors and course designers who use ICON are invited to attend these demonstrations.
