Congratulations to Dave Long, associate director of OTLT Enterprise Instructional Technology, who was recently recognized with the 2021 UI Outstanding Staff Award.

This honor can be earned once in a staff member’s career at the University of Iowa and is awarded for demonstrating extraordinary contributions extending beyond those normally expected or required by the nominee’s job responsibilities.

“Dave’s work has long been exemplary, but with the onset of the pandemic, it became extraordinary,” says Jonna Higgins-Freese, director of OTLT Instructional Services. “Dave has made contributions to supporting teaching and learning at the University of Iowa and beyond it to include broader communities, such as Kaltura and Panopto users and colleagues across the Big Ten and Unizin.”

Dave leads the Instructional Services–Enterprise Instructional Technology team, which provides service management and tier-three support for ICON (Canvas), UI Capture (Panopto), Exam Scoring, UI Learn (Canvas Catalog), Respondus, Turnitin, Top Hat, Elements of Success, Wiki, and other services.

Dave’s longtime contributions were especially evident when the university swiftly shifted to virtual teaching and learning during the spring 2020 semester. He has been instrumental in ensuring that instructional technology can meet the growing needs of UI instructors and students. In the past 18 months, Dave has:

  • Led the team to rapidly implement the automatic Zoom to Panopto upload process in March 2020.
  • Monitored and forecasted usage and performance of services, like Zoom and Panopto, to identify potential concerns and accommodate increased usage of services during the shift to online instruction.
  • Collaborated with Shawna Dark, the Chief Academic Technology Officer & Executive Director of Research, Teaching, and Learning at UC Berkeley, and Alex Anderson, the Product Owner for Media Management at the University of Minnesota, to draft a letter to Kaltura’s CIO outlining the higher education community’s needs and concerns. The letter was signed by 24 university CIOs and catalyzed a new path forward.
  • Presented to national audiences on the UI’s Panopto retention policy through webinars hosted by Internet2 and by Panopto.
  • Presented at Service Management World 2021 with colleagues from UCLA and the University of Central Oklahoma on “The Challenge of Major Incident Management in Higher Education.”
  • Participated in an online panel discussion hosted by IMS Global with colleagues from The Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, Unizin, and Instructure on how universities are leveraging data for COVID response.
  • Served as chair and chair emeritus of the IT Leadership Development team.
  • Served on the ITS Disaster Recovery team.
  • Been chosen as chair-elect to the BTAA Learning Technology Liaisons group.

“Much of Dave’s daily work is unseen by most users on campus. However, whether in a pandemic or not, the value of that work cannot be overstated,” said Maggie Jesse, OTLT senior director. “Dave’s years of building up services has created an environment where technology increases the effectiveness, efficiency, and success of all University of Iowa instructors and students.”

Please help us congratulate Dave on this well-deserved recognition.
