In response to COVID-19 and its impact on academia, the Center for Teaching has canceled the on-campus 2020 Course Design Institute. Instructors interested in learning about or refreshing their knowledge of the principles of course design are encouraged to enroll in Cornerstones for Course Design.

What is the Course Design Institute?

The Course Design Institute is an intensive, multi-day institute for instructors wishing to learn how to design or substantially revise a course. Instructors accepted into the institute will:

  • Learn and apply a process for designing an effective course. 
  • Create a plan for developing elements of a course, including learning objectives, assignments and assessments, and the course outline. 
  • Explore teaching strategies and philosophies with colleagues and Center for Teaching staff. 

Please note that the Course Design Institute is open to instructors who wish to design or substantially revise an in-person course. If you wish to work on an online course, please apply for Distance and Online Education's Design4Online, a comprehensive training program that assists instructors at all experience levels in designing or redesigning online courses through the implementation of best practices and leading online pedagogy.
