Keynote Presentations
Jon Garfinkel, Professor of Finance / Henry B. Tippie Research Fellow (The University of Iowa)
jon-garfinkel@uiowa.edu
Bio: Jon Garfinkel is a Professor of Finance and Henry B. Tippie Research Fellow at the University of Iowa. He earned his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL in August of 1994. Dr. Garfinkel has published in several journals including The Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and Journal of Accounting Research. He is currently an Associate Editor of the Financial Review. He is the program chair for the Midwest Finance Association’s annual meeting in 2017 (in Chicago). Professor Garfinkel is a proponent of the FLIP teaching technique and has won several teaching awards using it. He serves the Tippie College of Business as Chair of the standing Committee on Teaching and Learning. He serves the University of Iowa as co-chair of their insurance and retirement standing committee.
Presentation Abstract: Student learning is increasing in their engagement. Jon Garfinkel migrated to the FLIPped class approach to enable this. For undergraduates embarking on their first finance course, the ability to re-listen to recorded lectures on complex material is crucial. So too is the in-class group work – on complex, real-world finance problems – that replaces the typical lecture during class time. These major components encouraged him to pilot Canvas. It allows streaming video (linked to the UI’s ShareStream server). It offers online quiz taking that incentivizes students to listen to those recordings. It promotes diversity in group composition (in the classroom) by facilitating randomized group formation by the professor. And perhaps most importantly, it offers students a calendar-view of their upcoming responsibilities, whenever they log in and observe the course home page. He is very pleased with Canvas’ functionality on all of the above.
Colin Hesse, Assistant Professor for Speech Communication (Oregon State University)
colin.hesse@oregonstate.edu
Bio: Colin Hesse, Assistant Professor, joined the Department of Speech Communication at Oregon State University in September 2013. Colin completed his Ph.D. At Arizona State University in 2009. His research focuses on the links between interpersonal communication and both psychological and physiological health. Specific communication processes of interest include the communication of affection, alexithymia, and family communication.
Presentation Abstract: Colin Hesse has experience using Canvas in building courses for both offline and online delivery. For his offline Family Communication class, Professor Hesse uses Canvas to post class content in Modules, Assignments, Quizzes, and Grades. For most assignments, Professor Hesse uses the Speed Grading tool to grade assignments online, and has also posted rubrics to assist students in understanding that grade. In these ways Canvas can be used as the hub of the course, where students always know where they can access necessary information regarding the course. For his online Advanced Interpersonal class, Professor Hesse adds the usage of tools such as Discussion to post discussion topics, class lectures, practice quizzes, introductory weekly videos, and the ability to form and communicate with specific groups of students in the course using both People and Collaborate.
Ashley Hasty, Senior Lecturer of Apparel Merchandising (Indiana University - Bloomington)
hastya@indiana.edu
Bio: Ashley Hasty's work focuses on fostering creativity and collaboration through innovative uses of technology. Her courses include active learning techniques, cooperative learning, and service-learning. These methods encourage the student to take a central role in their learning process, use their peers as resources, and provide opportunities to immediately apply course material to real-world scenarios. She received her Bachelor of Science in fashion marketing and management from Stephens College and her M.S. and PhD in textile and apparel management from the University of Missouri. In addition, Dr. Hasty researches historical wedding garments and innovative teaching strategies.
Presentation Abstract: Students learn best when they can work with course content in different ways, a need which Ashley Hasty both recognizes and serves. For her Strategies in Retail Promotion class, Professor Hasty uses several Canvas tools to provide content and feedback in multiple formats, thus ensuring students’ understanding and growth. For two thirds of the semester, the class spends its time on local field trips. Professor Hasty uses Modules and Calendar to keep her students on track, guiding them through a series of video lectures and quizzes designed to assess her students’ understanding of the lecture content. While on these trips, Professor Hasty is able to use the Attendance tool via her mobile device. Finally, and according to Professor Hasty, most importantly, the use of media (video) comments in SpeedGrader allows her to give comprehensive, detailed feedback, her body language and expressions contributing to the students’ understanding of her words.
Steven Horowitz, Adjunct Assistant Professorfor American Studies (The University of Iowa)
Nina Prozzo, Lead Instructional Designer for the Division of Continuing Education (The University of Iowa)
steven-horowitz@uiowa.edu and nina-prozzo@uiowa.edu
Bios:
Steven Horowitz - Steve has taught classes in rock and roll at the University of Iowa (and at other undergraduate institutions in America and abroad) for more than 30 years, and he has written extensively on the topic for academic and popular publications and websites. He has roughly 8,000 record albums, 10,000 CDs, and 100s of 45 rpm singles that he is struggling to upload on his computer. Rock and roll is more than a lifelong interest to him, it is his passion.
Nina Prozzo - Nina is currently an instructional designer working with UIOWA's Division of Continuing Education. She has an extensive background in course media development, instructional technology, graphic and web design, and instructional design.
Presentation Abstract: Explore considerations for creating a dynamic and engaging environment for the online learner by examining the strategies for creating connections between students, instructor, and content. Learn how to best utilize the Canvas Front Page feature, created an orientation module for your students, employ tools for student feedback throughout the course, create opportunities for peer-to-peer interaction, and more!
